Will I lose my passport?

No, you don’t automatically lose your passport whilst you are bankrupt, but you will need to contact your bankruptcy trustee (ITSA) to obtain permission travel overseas. They will ask how you paid for your ticket, what date you will be leaving Australia and what date you will be returning.

I was extremely nervous about making contact the first time as I thought I would be treated as a no-hoper and have to endure reams of paperwork and some indignation. To my surprise I found a very caring and sympathetic response to my enquiry.

Yours sincerely - Steve (Cairns)
